Excerpt 1:
She’d made it into town in record time, unfortunately. It was almost eleven and she only had a few miles to go to reach her parents’ home in South Laguna, but that didn’t make sitting in this bottleneck any less frustrating. She knew the locals blamed Laguna Nights for the fact their tiny town was now a top tourist destination. Laura wasn’t sure she agreed, but at the moment, she didn’t care what it was that helped all these people discover her town. She just wished they’d all leave.
Up ahead, the light turned green again. Finally, the car in front of her crawled forward. Laura pulled Tucker back into her lap and smiled at the feeling of forward motion. She cruised by Main Beach and had just passed Tommy Bahama on her left when she felt her body shoved back against the seat. Her head whipped forward, nearly hitting the steering wheel. Her arms flew out from her sides and she felt Tucker rise up off her lap. She screamed when she felt another jolt, and her head again whipped towards the steering wheel as the impact of the car behind her pushed her car into the one in front of her.
The impact wasn’t strong enough for the airbags to deploy, Laura thought in shock, realizing what could have happened to Tucker if they had. She cradled him in her arms and struggled to open the car door.
“Are you alright?” asked an absolutely gorgeous man who appeared by the side of her car. She wondered where he’d come from. She hadn’t been sitting here that long, had she? She couldn’t speak. All she could do was stare at him. He had dark, soulful eyes, eyes that were currently focused on her with a worried look in them. As she continued to stare at him, he reached his arms out to her, muscular arms sprinkled with thick dark hair. “Here, let me help you.”
He pulled her car door open further as the sound of sirens pierced the air. The man put his arm around her waist and practically lifted her out of the car. His touch felt so private, almost intimate. Before she could process what was happening, he escorted Laura and Tucker to the sidewalk.
“Are you hurt?” he asked, letting go of her waist. She was surprised at the disappointment she found in that. She didn’t know this man, but had taken comfort in his strong arm as he escorted her across the street. She missed that comfort now that he’d let go of her. And if she were honest with herself, she’d enjoyed the feel of his hand on her side. When he had touched her, a zing of instant attraction had replaced the panic of the accident. “I’m Paul Dorn, by the way.”
