Life can get pretty complicated for any seventeen-year-old girl, but for a home-schooled telepathic black girl trying to survive in a prestigious private school in small-town Jonesborough, Tennessee, it can be maddening; especially when her telepathic father keeps eavesdropping on her thoughts!

Jaycie Lerner's family isn't the usual mom-dad-kid setup. Jaycie's mom is MIA, but Allison, her personal live-in trainer, is more than a mom, with her own special abilities, like being able to lift cars and run incredibly fast. And Jaycie's godfather John is more than persuasive; he can literally convince anyone to do anything.

As far as the rest of the world's concerned, Jaycie's on the outside looking in. The townsfolk love Jaycie's paediatrician father, but she doesn't fit in with "normal" kids, and she doesn't really want to. Most of her free time is spent training to keep her telekinetic and telepathic powers under control. But there's one thing she can't control; and that's her feelings, especially when her best friend Matt is nearby. If only he knew what she was truly capable of...

Everything seems to be status quo for Jaycie until she receives a cryptic message from a stranger and meets a very unusual girl new to Jonesborough. Then all hell breaks loose!

“I thought you were gone already,” she answered in a moody monotone. He poured himself a cup of black coffee. “Having a bad day already, bonehead?” he asked, trying unsuccessfully to keep the sarcastic grin off of his face. “I don’t understand why you’re still insisting on this school thing,” she objected, suddenly angry.

Her mentor threw her head back and laughed. “That’s a super plan, Jay,” she said calmly. “I can wait until my date gets here. He’ll ring the bell, and your father will come to find me.” Her voice was smooth and melodic, almost as if she were reading Jaycie a bedtime story. “You’ll have to let me down. I’ll go on my date and probably get home late. You’ll be asleep by then...” Allison paused, looking down at Jaycie with a serene expression on her face. “When I do get home, I’ll go into the garage and smash your truck with my bare hands.

This is a book that takes paranormal to a different level.  Here you have Jaycie is a human with powers that she must learn to use and control but at the same time she must keep them a secret from the people around her.  It is already hard enough to be a teen and having to have a normal life and make the right choses can you imagine having powers to deal with too. The more she develops her powers the stronger they get.  Being normal is not in her vocabulary and making friends in not going to happen.  She keeps her distance the others.  With Going to school and having the power to read minds I guess it would be nice and easy to pass the courses.  Then you have Matt her friend that is sweet and always there for her.  They start off as friends but it develops into something more serious. Throughout her high school years Jaycie realizes not all is what it seems.  Will Jaycie world come crashing down?  Will she find a way to keep her two lives separate or will they collide?

This is not a typical story that I like to read.  This story took a while to develop but it was not a bad story.  I did have a hard time being drawn into the story and often thought about not reading anymore but since I agreed to do a review for it I continued and finally finished it.  It did get better toward the end. If you like the philosophy of evolutions then this book is for you.
