Kristin’s Ghost – Excerpt 1 – The Ghost

Night after night the ghost would appear and dance by her bedside for several seconds.  After a while Kristin stopped being afraid of it.  She began to study it and even started to look forward to its appearances.  The shifting colors of the ghostly form were quite pretty.  Occasionally, the girl thought she could see a head or arms or legs trying to materialize.  One night Kristin was certain she saw a young girl’s face take shape briefly.
She began calling the spirit Cassandra.  The name had just popped into her head during one of the spirit’s visits.  On nights that Cassandra didn’t appear, Kristin would worry about her.  She imagined evil spirits chasing or holding Cassandra back.
Most often she appeared at or shortly after one twenty, but never later than one thirty.  On nights like tonight, when the bedside clock/radio changed to one twenty-nine without any activity, Kristin’s concern for her spirit friend grew.  “You can do it, Cassandra,” she whispered, “I know you can.”
Kristin held her breath as the seconds ticked by.
The thirteen-year-old’s brow relaxed as her bedroom brightened.  She watched as the dancing form appeared next to her bed.
“I’m so glad you made it.” Kristin spoke to the light, finally allowing herself to breathe. “I was getting worried.”
An arm seemed to reach out toward her.  Kristin smiled and pulled her hand out from under the covers and reached toward the light.  As her fingers neared Cassandra, the light danced away and then disappeared altogether as it did much too quickly, every time.
“What are you trying to tell me?” Kristin sighed and flopped her head down onto the soft pillows.  She searched her mind for messages that Cassandra may have given to her, like the ghost had done with her name.  Frustrated, she found none, though.
Lately, after a visit from Cassandra, Kristin would lay awake until her father came home.  She discovered something she hadn’t known about him before.  Her dad came upstairs and checked on her and the boys every night before he went to bed.  She always pretended to be asleep when he looked in.
Tonight, she hadn’t needed to act. The hours of sleep Kristin lost every night were catching up with her and she drifted off after only a few minutes.  She had a restless sleep, though, tossing and turning until her alarm went off at six forty five.  Bleary eyed, the seventh grader dragged herself out of bed and got ready for another day of school.
