It had been so simple and easy to replace the flashlight's batteries when he could see what he was doing. His shaking hands, suddenly had five thumbs each.
Xander heard a noise stopped, too. Several long seconds crept by. Had it been just his imagination? Xander pondered the question for a few moments. No, he'd definitely heard it.
The sound could have been tiny toenails taping on the rocky ground. A chill ran down his spine. The faint noise started again. It was right in front of him! He jumped back. The noise jumped with him. Xander kicked and swung his feet and arms out in all directions. The batteries flew out of the metal tube, bouncing off the side wall before they clattered and rolled off. The other noise got louder. His lethal feet were ready to strike out again. It sounded very close... Impossibly close... It was, Xander realized, coming from inside his own head!
He slipped his dry tongue between his teeth. The noise quit immediately. His own chattering teeth turned out to be the blood sucking, dagger-clawed, evil creature that had been about to devour him.
Embarrassment overrode fear. Then a different fear gripped him.
Oh, no! The spring... He touched the end of the cap with his pinky finger. Miracle upon miracle, after all that, he found the spring still attached. Revved up from the sudden surge of adrenalin, Xander tried to calm down. He declared the area around him to be a monster-free zone. He felt better.
When he was much younger he'd been deathly afraid of the dark. Preschool Alexander was convinced that monsters lurked in the closet and under his bed. The strongest memeory Xander had of his father was one night he came to his room, and declared the top of Xander's bed to be a "monster-free zone'. It had worked. Xander sometimes had to across the dark bedroom at night, but he always felt safe once he climbed onto the 'monster-free zone'.
