New Characters and Crossovers
By Summer Lane
State of Alliance deals
with many of our main players in The
Collapse Series, as well as introducing some new characters. One of my
favorite new characters is Lieutenant Devin May and Elle Costas, the girl with
the bomb dog. Elle is a character who has crossed over from my parallel
post-apocalyptic story of The Zero
Trilogy. Elle has been a character in my mind for years, and being able to bring her into Cassidy’s story is so much fun!
Devin May reminds of Chris Young – a younger Chris Young,
one before the brutality of war left its mark on him. He is a SEAL – like Chris
– and, like Chris, he is very charming. I wanted someone whom Chris could have
a sense of camaraderie with, and someone Cassidy could relate to on a new
level. Someone who would add to the loyal team of characters in this series and
take things up a notch.
In total, I added eleven new characters to the storyline of State of Alliance, which was quite the
task, let me tell you! There are a couple of plot twists and character
revelations that I think will surprise readers who have been following the
series, and I am so happy and excited to share them with you!
Saying Hello to the Sea
By Summer Lane
The fun in writing State
of Alliance was that I was able to remove Cassidy from the middle of
California – namely, the Central Valley and the Los Angeles area – and take her
to an entirely new setting: The Pacific Ocean. I had envisioned this tale for a
long time, and bringing it to life was epic!
Cassidy Hart’s story began in Los Angeles. Since then, she
has been primarily spending her time in the Central Valley of California and
the Sierra Nevada Mountains. State of
Alliance brings her tale to Monterey, California – one of the most beautiful
places in the Golden State. It has all the beauty and drama that a storyline
needs, and I was able to utilize some of the most popular hotspots in the city
as prime focal points in my plot – places like Cannery Row, Fisherman’s Wharf
and the Presidio.
The element of water allowed me to take Cassidy into new
adventures with the Navy – specifically where Chris Young is concerned, since
the love of her life is a SEAL. We’re throwing Commander Young into his most
skilled area of talent. There are so many things I loved about writing this
book, I don’t know if I can just choose one! I can’t wait to share State of Alliance with the world!
Monterey and Cassidy Hart
By Summer Lane
To write State of
Alliance, it was very important that I get some serious firsthand
experience of the location that I was writing about. The book begins in
Sacramento, eventually taking Cassidy to the coastline. I lived in Sacramento
for nine years, so I definitely had a good idea of the geography of the “City
of Trees,” as it’s called. For Monterey, however, I needed to walk the streets,
count the steps, smell the air, see the ocean and feel the temperature. I
needed to know what Cassidy would feel here. I needed to take this beautiful
little coastal town and turn it into a post-apocalyptic warzone. (Sorry,
Monterey. You’re not the first town to fall prey to my storylines!)
I traveled to Monterey in November of 2014 to scope out the
area. I visited Fisherman’s Wharf, overlooked the Presidio of Monterey, walked
through the halls of the Carmel Mission, strolled down the sidewalks at Cannery
Row and dipped my hands into the cold water of the Pacific Ocean in Pacific
Grove. I kept track of road names and avenues. I recorded temperatures and
studied the bay. Most importantly, I researched the Naval Postgraduate School,
where a large portion of Cassidy’s story takes place.
As a writer, I can honestly say that getting out of the
office and actually researching a subject or location is one of the most
refreshing and inspiring experiences. It gives you a sense of realism that you
can translate into your writing. I highly recommend it, and I loved every
minute of researching for State of
Alliance!
