The Chalice of Kari
Cahira O’Donnell
As Rom returned from
the madness of his passion, he was devastated. Gods, what had he done to her? What
had he done? His brother had been right. They did not deserve Kahara and could
not be trusted to care for her. Gently he lifted her limp body from his chest
and placed her on the pallet. Getting up, he put on his flight suit.
“Rom? What is it?”
“Ah, lady, I know there
can be no forgiveness this time.”
He was on his knees in
the low tent, his back to her, head hanging, black hair veiling his face, arms
helplessly at his sides as his big hands fisted in anguish.
“I will send in our
medic. My team will surround and guard you. They will see you to safety. I will
not impose myself on you further.”
He fully intended to
walk into the arctic night and never return. Kahara could feel it.
He heard her rise from
the bed upon which he had just ravaged her – again. Standing in front of him,
wearing only her glorious hair, she reached to push his hair from his face,
tucking it behind his ears. Holding his strong jaw, she searched his eyes. Her
cheeks were flushed, lips swollen from his brutal kisses. Kahara was amazed to
see tears filling his silver eyes. Then she sank before him naked and
vulnerable, pooling her hair at his knees.
“Don’t leave me, Rom. That
was the most beautiful moment of my life. If you reject me now, I don’t think I
could stand it,” she whispered, tears in her voice.
“Gods, lady, what would
you have me do?”
“Get undressed – let’s
go back to bed. I want to have you hold me for a while and then we can do it
again. This time though, you get to be on top.” She smiled up at him, her eyes
misty, tears on her face.
“You put yourself back
in my hands? Pool your hair in front of me, when I have just broken your trust
and ravaged you again?” Rom shouted as he pulled her from the floor to stand in
front of him. “What madness is this, Kahara? What madness?”
“That was not
ravagement. That was making love. Did you not enjoy it?”
“Lady, you gave me
ecstasy such as I have never known.”
“As you did me.”
“How can this be? I
made you scream! You screamed my name for mercy. I gave you none.”
“You didn’t hurt me and
that was not screaming for mercy. I love you, Rom. I want to make love to you
again. Make me scream again.”
