An excerpt from Silent Orchids, taken from Chapter 18…

When Kaeleigh woke up, her mind a blur but weighed down with the gravity of something dark having just happened, walked into the living room. She yawned and wiped the sleep away from her face, zombie-like her limbs were slow and sluggish. Kaeleigh looked into the kitchen to the floor where shattered glass gave way to the outburst of emotion she could no longer contain. Shame crept into her face, her strength had failed her. Or did it at all? Lighter than she had been earlier her emotions, she realized, were stable for now. Finn’s back was to her as he looked out the slider door to the balcony, his hands clasped behind his back. She knew he was aware of her; he always was. Without even looking at her he sighed then said, “I know you have questions and no idea what is going on. There is little I’m able to say at this point, but first...” Then he turned around to look at Kaeleigh with soft eyes. “Are you all right?”
Kaeleigh put her hands on her hips, dropped her head, took another deep breath, then looked up at Finn and gave him a curt nod. He understood she was trying to process everything and wasn’t quite ready to talk about her feelings. He simply reciprocated her nod.
“Who are you, Finn? What are you?” she pleaded softly.
“I’m your friend and I’ll protect you with my life. I am also a...” he sighed with frustration or possibly relief of the interruption, “Chel’s here.” Just before Chel rattled the door handle, he added, “I thought you might need someone you trusted.” He sounded dejected. Chel came hesitantly through the door, as if not sure what she was walking into.
“Where’s Daegan?” Kaeleigh asked after a deep breath, looking around her apartment.
“He’s doing a perimeter search outside... or he left,” Finn answered with a casual shrug of his shoulders. Answering the questioning look on Kaeleigh’s face, he continued, “I don’t trust him, Kae.” Then he shifted his gaze slightly over her head as Daegan walked back into the apartment.
“You shouldn’t,” Daegan said flatly. Finn could have been embarrassed that Daegan heard what he said, but he wasn’t. He looked at him as if he had been telling it straight to his face.
“Not to ruin this lovely tension-filled moment, but Kaeleigh and I need a minute,” Chel said as she implored Kaeleigh with questioning eyes. Kaeleigh nodded and Chel grabbed her arm, tugging her back into Kaeleigh’s bedroom.

My playlists and inspiration behind the music:

When I started writing, I thought it was interesting to hear about people’s playlist for their books. But I didn’t really get it. I didn’t think I would be the type of person to write with music—I just didn’t think I would be able to. Now, granted I LOVE music. My husband is a musician and I’m surrounded by it, but write to it… probably not.

There were times when I was writing that I felt stuck or couldn’t find life in the words on the page… it felt dry. To take my mind off it, I put on some music or I’d be somewhere and a song would come on. Suddenly, I would feel it. Whether it be the words to the songs, or just the emotion that poured out from the music itself, it would stir inspiration inside of me. I would see a scene play out in my mind, or I could relate to the emotions the character was trying to portray. All because of the music. Music is everywhere! It’s used in movies, TV, commercials, jingles, etc. For most, it provides a focus and an atmosphere for emotion.

My husband Steven James Wylie is a musician. He teamed up with talented Blair Masters and they created this beautifully haunting soundtrack that reflects the tone and heart of Silent Orchids. Due to distributor changes within the company, the buy links and even the preview links are not currently accessible. I apologize for that.
So I put together some songs that I felt inspired by to write. After months of adding music as I would find it, I ended up with over 2 ½ hours worth of music. I found that the songs with lyrics I was eventually able to tune out the specifics of the song and let its emotion or rhythm it take me where I needed to be inside my book or a certain character. I could listen (or not listen and just feel) to it over and over as I would write.

And here is the playlist for the second book, Veiled Shadows (and truth be told I listened to much of the same list for book 3, Fractured Darkness, as well)…
