"FUCK!"
exclaimed Shane. "Did you guys see that?"
"Shut up, pussy, and keep walking," growled
Daniel. "Stop trying to freak us out."
"No, seriously, look." Shane grabbed Daniel's arm
and pointed ahead. "There's something up there!"
The path they were on would lead them to a clearing a that
was about fifty feet ahead of them, before it would plunge back into the
heavily treed woods on the way to the school. It was to that clearing that
Shane now pointed. Even though it was not very far ahead the swirling mist made
it difficult to see what had given Shane such a fright. Ayden took a step
forward and Shane grabbed the back of his jacket. "No, dude, don't!"
he cried. "I'm telling you, something is there!"
Ayden frowned. "This is not working. You are not going
to freak me out, you hear?"
Shane didn't answer; he just started to take a few shaky
steps backwards, his hand still firmly clutching the back of Ayden's jacket,
his lips starting to tremble in fear.
"I think he's right," Ryan's head was tipped to
one side as he tried to make out the shape in the fog ahead of them.
"There's something there."
All four boys now looked ahead towards the clearing, through
the misty, swirling fog, their eyes straining as they tried to find a shape in
the haze.
Suddenly the mist broke, and there, before them, stood a
strange figure. It looked like a man, all clad in black, but it was impossibly
cadaver-thin. Its face was oval, white, and totally featureless, smooth, matt
and very large. It was tall, very tall,
it had to be at least ten feet high, with long, spindly arms that waved like
octopus tentacles as the hideously long legs took fast, huge steps towards
them. The boys gasped in unison but were frozen to the spot in fear and shock.
The tall, thin man moved closer, his knees reaching far too high as he strode
towards them, his arms waving and seeming to grow in length even as he walked.
Ryan screamed. It was all the boys needed to break their frozen stance. They
turned and ran, hearts beating and breath burning their throats, running for
all their lives.
