“Quick! On your feet!” Sir Roger whispered. The three of us staggered to our feet as he started to go through the jailer’s pockets. We removed our handcuffs and gags.
“No gun,” Sir Roger said with obvious disappointment. He did find a knife and stuck it in his pocket before walking to the window and looking down the trellis I had used to climb into the room.
“It barely held my weight,” I said.
“I’m afraid we shall have to leave a more conventional way,” he said and smiled briefly before the smile turned into a frown.
He motioned for us to be quiet and opened the door very slowly and quietly.
“Watch out!” I shouted as I recognized the shadow of the thin man standing in the doorway.
Sir Roger reacted by lunging toward the man who fired. The sound of the gun deafened me for a moment. I saw Bret’s father fall to the ground. Bret screamed and dropped to his knees where his father lay.
The kidnapper started to turn his gun toward me. I froze. I saw a blur out of the corner of my eye and realized Bruce had thrown himself at the man’s legs. They fell in a heap as the gun exploded a second time and I felt something hot whiz by my ear. I saw the gun skid across the floor and I dove for it. I saw the jailer throw Bruce off him and stand up. He started to move toward me.
“Stop or I’ll shoot,” I said.
“You von’t shoot,” he said with the same accent the maid had used. For such a thin man he had a very deep voice with an accent.
