Every
woman has secrets, and Cyndi Mills is no exception…
Cyndi has a beautiful daughter, and her
husband Jason is totally hot for her, but something is missing. As a cop, Jason
is extremely vigilant about safety and security, and Cyndi longs for some time
to herself, so she takes a Friday night job.
Jason thinks she’s cleaning offices,
when she’s actually dancing in a red bustier and six-inch stilettos at a club
called Sugar Shakers, something only her three best friends, also police wives,
know.
When
club employees start disappearing, the truth comes out…
A young runaway, Jade, and a military
widow, Lola, vanish, and Lola’s body is later found in the ocean. Cyndi begins
investigating—with some help from her friends—but when anonymous threats put
her daughter in jeopardy, she has no choice but to confess her lie to Jason,
rocking their previously solid marriage.
Jason
is furious, but Cyndi has to ask for even more if she hopes to solve the
mystery…
Cyndi convinces Jason to sign her up as
a confidential informant, and she officially goes undercover at the club, while
Jason struggles to control his jealousy. As the evidence mounts and the danger
becomes all too real, Jason fights to keep Cyndi safe.
But
no amount of security can protect someone when lies are more common
than the truth and no one is who they appear to
be.

Excerpt:
Jason
leaned against the counter, arms folded across his chest. She recognized that
look immediately. He was doing the cop thing, analyzing her, and she could tell
he knew something didn't add up. His left eyebrow rose just a tad higher than
the right as he studied her. "Why do you have glitter in your hair?"
Cyndi
shook her hair and a shower of glitter rained down on her sweatshirt. Damn. Somehow she had missed a boat load
of sparkle. Damn, that stuff got everywhere.
"Jody
brought her daughter's costume for a dance recital to work so I could help her
fix a tear. It was all covered in sparkles. The damn stuff got on everything.
Had to go back over the carpets with the sweeper twice and I'm still not sure
we got it all."
Jason
continued to stare down at her from his full six feet of height. His stare was
laser sharp, his presence imposing. It was no wonder he was so good at catching
the bad guy. Hardened criminals squirmed under the intensity of that stare.
Hopefully he couldn't see through her despite the fact she felt as transparent
as the shower curtain hanging in their bathroom.
"You
think Harper is going to want to do that stuff?"
"Harper
is four. It's a little early to predict if she will be a dancer or a swimmer or...whatever."
"Yeah,
well, I just don't want that glittery stuff all over the house. The guys won't
ever let me live it down, I show up to work all sparkly like that." He
shook his head.
Cyndi
stepped closer to her husband and wrapped her arms around him. "I'm
exhausted, honey. How about we go to bed?"
Jason
hugged her close. "You gonna wear a little French maid's outfit like you
do when you clean those offices?"
"Jason!"
"Can't
fault a guy for trying." Jason's grin was a sharp contrast to his earlier
scrutiny. He pulled out the neckline of her top and peered down into it.
"Come on. I know you gotta wear some kinda uniform!"
Thank
God she had changed in to her old white bra from the discount store and left
her bustier at work. Stepping back, Cyndi held her arms out and spun around
slowly. "You're looking at it, baby. Doesn't my ratty old sweatshirt turn
you on?"
"Not
as much as a little maid's outfit would. It's nearly Halloween. Maybe I ought
to pick one up for you to wear at work. You know, so you don't mess up your own
clothes."
"Ohhh,
Jason... you are such a guy!"
"You
would rather I be such a girl?"
"Of
course, not! Just don't be so obvious about being a man all the time."
Cyndi filled a glass of water from the tap, drank it in one gulp, then placed
her used cup in the sink before heading toward their bedroom. "Come on,
cop man. You play your cards right I might let you frisk me before we go to
sleep."
Cyndi
heard light switches flip, door chains sliding and the announcement that the
house emergency alarm was being set. Jason rushed through his nightly round of
safety checks as he yelled to her from various locations around the house.
"Do
you have anything on you that might hurt me?" Snap went the deadbolt on
the front door. "Needles, knives, or guns?" Click went the security
latch on the sliding door to the back yard. "Do I need gloves or cuffs...?"
"Not sure you're
gonna need gloves but cuffs might be fun," she called back as she climbed
out of her clothes and dropped into the cool sheets.
Questions for Authors
Is there a message in your novel that you want
readers to grasp?
Undercover in Six Inch Stilettos, and the whole Secret Lives series was really just written with the intention of
giving the reader something fun to read. If there were any message I would like
to get out there via the stories, it would be that romance doesn’t end when you
turn forty or because you are married. Cyndi and Jason have a very active and
enjoyable intimate relationship even after a decade of marriage.
Was there an Author who inspired you to write?
I can’t honestly say that
there was any one author that inspired me to write overall. There are plenty of
authors that I admire for different reasons. Stephen King is an amazing story
teller and Janet Evanovich writes with wit and an easy to read style.
How did you come up with the characters in your
books?
All of my characters in
all of my books are inspired by people I encounter in my life.
What are your current projects?
The sequel to Undercover in Six Inch Stilettos is in
the works for a December release. I am currently working on writing the third
in the series. I also have a rough draft of the first book in a new baseball
romance series waiting on my attention for edits.
Do you see writing as a career?
I’m trying like crazy to
make it so. I would love nothing more than to spend my days crafting tales that
readers can’t wait to read.
Do you ever picture yourself and one of your
heroines? If so, which one?
The only time I have ever
felt like I wrote myself into a character was in a book that is not currently
published. It is being released instead, chapter by chapter on my blog each
Monday as the #FreeReadMonday post.
Do you have a favorite heroine/hero from one of
your books? If so, who?
What kind of research do you do for your books?
Every book is different.
For the Secret Lives series I was
able to use my background in crime scene investigation and forensic science but
for the new series I am working on, I had to get online and read up on Cape Cod
where it is set. A good friend who lives in the area also sent me a package of
useful information on tourism etc. in the area.
What is the hardest part of writing your book?
Finding the time to write
when I am inspired.
If you could say
anything to your readers what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to try a new author. I have had the great
experience of meeting many talented authors in the last couple of years. Some
of my very favorite books are written by indie and unknown authors.
What is your favorite
Genre and why?
Romantic intrigue is my favorite. It combines the best of
happily ever after with good suspense. I love happy endings as much as I love
trying to figure out the whodunits.
Do you prefer to
write alone or do you like to collaborate with other authors?
I have actually done both and I find that as a writer I
prefer to work alone. I do, however, rely heavily on author friends for beta
reading and such. I take constructive criticism well and use it to make my work
the best it can be.
Do you ever get
writer’s block? If so, how do you get through it?
When I get writer’s block, the quickest cure for me is to
find inspiration. I go on a reading binge, devouring books until I get my own
stories turning again in my brain.
When you are reading
a book, who is your favorite author?
I recently discovered Jill Shalvis and I really like her
books. Gena Showalter is also an excellent, and diversified, author. Right now
though, my two favorite books are by new authors. Sean’s Sweetheart by Allie
Kincheloe and Jewel of Ramstone by J.M. Powers.
Do you come up with
the cover or does someone else do it?
I have absolutely no skill with graphic design. I may have a
general idea of what I might like but I defer that part of the creative process
to people far more talented than I.
If you could change
anything in your writing what would that be?
I wish I had more time to write. I still have a day job so
that means I have to work writing in whenever I can.
What book if any
would you want to be made into a movie?
Undercover in Six
Inch Stilettos would be a really fun movie to watch. The soundtrack would
be out of this world!
Who would you want to
play the hero/heroine?
Alex O’Laughlin of Hawaii 5-0 fame would be the perfect
Jason Mills. Absolutely perfect.
Everyone uses
computers, tablets, phones and no one uses handwritten form or typewriters,
what do you prefer to use?
My lap top. It is an extension of my hands. Okay, not
really, but it is my preferred mode of writing. I can’t manually write the
words fast enough to keep up with my brain.
Is there a ritual you
do everything before you begin your book?
My only real ritual is to everything I possibly can prior to
actually sitting down and writing. I am a great procrastinator. Dishes will be
washed, laundry folded, floors mopped and cupboards organized before I will
type one single word. And, the document will be open on the computer screen the
entire time, just waiting for me.
What do you do when
you finish your book and turn it in to the editor?
Honestly? I start the next project.
