Pursued by the Dawn Warriors – a group dedicated to cleansing the world of evil – Robert’s survival is at stake. Literally.
Elaine and
Vanessa took up positions either side of the kitchen chair in which Pixie sat.
I had watched Vanessa spend hours toying with her prey when we hunted together.
She would let them think they'd escaped and then suddenly appear in front of
them for a moment. Over and over again she did this until whoever it was she
had targeted was a physical and mental wreck. Even then she would delay the
inevitable. It was a game, a sport to her. She was the fastest, most ruthless
vampire among the new breed. This meant Pixie was in grave danger and not just
from me.
"Now, now, Vanessa," I warned. "Play nice."
Pixie pulled her legs up underneath her and wrapped her arms around them in the
same way she had on the train down to London.
"I've saved you twice now, Rob," she said, "so it's time you brought
the old you - the cute Politics student with the Emo hair - out of where ever
you put him and listened to what I've got to say. It might just be useful to
you. If not, well, you were going to kill me anyway so what's another few
minutes between friends."
"You. Are. Not. My. Friend." I intoned each word separately, my teeth
grinding together with the effort it took to keep my fury under control.
Pixie sighed and reached across the table dividing us. She took both my hands
in hers and looked me straight in the eyes.
"The old you," she repeated. "The one that flirted with me in
the student union bar. The one that I was starting to fall for. That guy."
She leaned in and closed her eyes. Her lips brushed mine, tentative but
certain.
The last time I kissed someone, I ended up a vampire. This time, it was too
much to expect to be changed back. For a moment, though, I was human.
Everything that had happened to me melted away and I was, for want of a better
word, normal.
Pixie was first to pull away. She did so slowly, caressing my cheek all the
while.
"I am your friend, Robbo," she said. "Now, let's talk alone
without your two bodyguards cluttering up the place."
The big, toothy smile often used by second-hand car dealers and politicians
split her face as she glanced from Vanessa to Elaine and back again. "No
offence, ladies," she said.
I agreed and, taking her hand in mine, we stood and ducked out of the kitchen.
Vanessa's disquiet was almost tangible. It crackled, electric and turbulent, in
the air. Something about it made me uncomfortable.
In the corridor, I stopped, turned and looked back through the kitchen doorway.
Vanessa stood, impassive, and returned my stare.
Suddenly, she crumpled to the floor. A small silver dart protruded from her
skull. She began to twitch and couldn't stop.
"She'll start frothing at the mouth next." Pixie's voice was neutral,
uncaring. In her hands was a small crossbow like device.
Author Bio
I’m Lucy Eldritch and
I write paranormal-horror-urban-fantasy-vampire fiction set mainly in
Manchester (the one in the UK, not the one in New Hampshire) and London. I also
love red wine, but I suspect that’s not really something I should mention. Not
professional. Something like that. So, consider it un-mentioned.
