Some things are better left in the shadows
By fire and flame,
they were cutting it close. Pushing forward, they swept toward an older man
walking to the brick building, and Memphis whispered, “Watch this.”
The man stopped, clearly confused, and slowly reached into his pocket, withdrawing a key. They caught
up with him, and his eyes took on a milky
quality as Memphis whispered, “Walk. Unlock the door. You didn’t see us here.”
It was as easy as that. Brokk ran at Memphis’s heels. Emory. Emory. Emory. Emory.
His heart surged, carrying him faster as they spiraled up
the staircase to the third floor.
Memphis said, “I got the door.”
The door swung forward just as the electricity cut.
As they entered the room, Brokk skidded to a halt when he
spotted a silhouette at the end of the hallway.
She froze. Her petite figure stumbled back in alarm. Brokk
couldn’t help himself; he just wanted to be near her. He whispered, “Em.”
Her scream echoed throughout every fiber in his body, and by
fire and flame did she move fast. She tore to another room and ran back full-on
assaulting him, silver pans and books flying toward his head.
“Em!” He dodged the flying objects while moving toward her.
“I swear if you take another step—” She didn’t get to finish
her thought. Fear seeped from her as her face drained of all color. Her body
crumpled. Brokk rushed forward, catching her before she hit the floor. Memphis
appeared from the shadows, solemnly declaring, “I just placed her memories back
in. Her mind couldn’t handle it. She will come around in a couple of days or
so. We have to move.”
A smug expression crossed Memphis’s face for only a brief
moment as he took Emory in like a prize. Brokk kept his arms around her, and
not letting his emotions take hold, also gripped Memphis’s arm. Each time it
was easier to fall into the pull of the current of energy. The world cracked,
shattering into a million pieces, but at
the same time into nothingness.
