AFTER SPENDING ALMOST thirty-six hours on a stuffy, smelly Greyhound bus I have decided that never again will I travel by bus. Ever. I have also discovered that I am prone to motion sickness. Luckily, my intermittent vomiting into a paper bag does spare me the inconvenience of a seat mate. It seems the smell is a deterrent. I manage to snag a few hours of nightmare-filled sleep and wake up shaking in terror, sure that Liam has found me and I am about to join Mr. Miller in the next life. The balding, middle-aged man with the saggy middle in the seat across from mine studies my face for a moment and then shrugs to himself before going back to the book he is reading. Yes folks, chivalry is, in fact, dead, I think to myself, and then grab my Kindle from my messenger bag and try to get lost in fiction for a while.
Every stop we make along the way is absolute torture for me. What if Liam is there lying in wait? What if he hurts someone else trying to get to me? Am I doing the right thing by running away? After beginning to hyperventilate five or six times, I decide to just stare at the floor between my feet whenever the bus pulls to a stop. Hey, maybe it isn’t the perfect solution, but it works.
