Lying on the ground with his eyes closed, he struggled to breathe. His entire body hurt. When her hand touched his arm he suddenly felt calm, his tense body began to relax. The moon was bright, shining down through the trees. It made Adam want to linger, to stay where he was comfortable and rest. But something, rather someone, was telling him he needed to wake up, now was not the time for him to take a nap. Reluctantly opening his eyes, he forced himself to stand, and frowned when he did so. Glancing down, he saw a body on the ground with the knife protruding out of its chest. His body!
Startled, Adam jumped back, staring at his hands and then down at the clear form that his body now seemed to be. He could almost see through himself. Opening his mouth to speak, no sound would come out. He began to tremble. His body on the ground was too still. He became worried. Pacing and shaking his head staring in horror at his naked frame continued to lie so still on the bed of leaves that coated the ground, No, I can’t be dead! Not like this, I can still feel everything.
Adam watched the small white haired woman reach for the knife. He started to stretch his hand out trying to stop her from pulling the knife form his chest.
Blake beat him to it. He was beside her, snatching her hand away from Adam’s prone form before she touched the handle.
Adam could do nothing but stand there and watch the woman’s hand touch Blake softly. Her hand glowed and Blake’s eyes opened wide for a moment then his entire demeanor went from being aggressively protective to relaxing and letting her have her way.
A soft smile curved both their lips.
Adam was incapable of communicating with Blake in his clear form. He was forced to watch Blake nod, release her hand and step back. The pale woman’s hand moved back towards his body on the ground. She gently caressed the knife with the tip of her fingers. She didn’t wrap her hand around the knife, yet it began to lift up.
Adam watched, horrified that Blake was allowing this female to pull the knife from his chest. Blake had said it himself, pulling it out would kill him. If he consented to her to doing this, it would allow the blade to rip his heart apart and would definitely end his life. Blake was supposed to be his friend. How could he stand by and let someone they didn’t even know do this to him? Adam trusted Blake with his life!
The emotions were overwhelming and he wanted to scream, to lash out. He couldn’t believe, after all he had been through, nearly dying twice before and all the pain he endured, now to be die as he stood idly by and just watched. And while Blake stood by and let it happen, this was just too much.
His mind was fuzzy. The life he had spent over the past six months, since being changed, flashed through his mind. With Blake’s help, he was acquiring the ability to cope. Not that it did any good now. Just when he was getting the hang of being a werewolf, it was all going away. What really sucked was the lousy drunken human ended his life and now Blake was allowing the girl, he was trying to save, finish him like this.
The female being that knelt by his body was not human. Adam didn’t know what she was and he seriously didn’t want her touching him. Reaching for her shoulder he had to pull her away from his lifeless form, Adam’s hand continued passing through her. Not even disturbing her or even the air in the least.
Staring down at his useless hand, then at his body, Adam moved over to Blake. Trying to get his attention by jumping up and down, Adam waved his arms wildly in front of him, trying to reach out to grab him as well. He had to let Blake know he was still here, that he was not gone and didn’t want to go anywhere! Similar to what it had done with the female, his hand passed through Blake unhindered. His clear form affected nothing at all. Adam stood, helplessly staring at his friend and the strange being. So much for ghosts being able to jump into people’s bodies and control them. Adam shook his head. His thoughts were extremely jumbled.
Blake watched in complete fascination while the knife slowly exited Adam’s skin. A small amount of blood seeped from the wound, covering the knife and dripping down his side to puddle on the leaves. While the blade vacated the laceration, the skin sealed itself shut, like a zipper being closed.
The woman’s fingertips barely touched the knife, yet it continued to lift up and away from Adam’s chest. With a slight push of her hand, the knife floated away and was allowed to fall to the ground beside Adams body. She closed her eyes and leaned up on her knees to where she was over his chest. Her hands spread as wide as they could. Murmuring softly, chanting in her strange native tongue. Her skin went from a dim glow, brightening with each word until she was a brilliant white light.
Adam could still hear Blake’s thoughts. He was amazed at what she was doing to Adam and watched in wonder while she performed what he thought of was some type of magic. He wondered briefly if she was woodland fey. If there were werewolves, there had to be other creatures out there in the woods too.
Adam hadn’t thought of that before. He continued staring at the brightly glowing woman kneeling on the ground and then back to his hands. The knowledge struck him. He was there in his spirit form, looking at his body lying peacefully on the scattered foliage. Adam closed his eyes and wondered if this was how it was to be dead and hoped like hell it wasn’t. Is this what happened to people’s spirits when they died? Did they have to linger and watch what was going on around them? If so, he really didn’t want to be dead. He was only eighteen years old. He was not old enough old die, his life was just beginning.
Suddenly, he sensed something coming towards him. His eyes popped open and he stared in worried confusion at the form that floated effortlessly in his direction. Adam felt the being’s warm glow surrounding him. He began to feel more at ease. The anxiety of seeing his lifeless body on the ground was ebbing.
Adam, there is nothing for you to fear while you are here in your spirit form. Your human body is being healed; it is not your time. Seriana has been sent to help you and your kind. But you must never tell her this. In a short time, she will remember who and what she is. For now, she will stay with Blake, with you.
