Excerpt
Darkness surrounded her. As she stumbled to find a foundation beneath her, she realized she was not herself. Her eyes focused and in the black, she could make out a solitary color: red. There was a bright fire burning, but it did little to warm the cold room. Looking at the fire she began to adjust and make out other shapes and figures in the shadows. The color red caught her attention again, this time it was blood.
She saw bodies strewn around the fire—oh God, he was killing people. At least she thought it was a he. There was a distinct masculine aspect to the presence, but she was not clear whether it was human or not. It did not lust for human things; as she looked around his mind she could see faces filled with fear, feel their terror and pain.
He stopped moving around the fire and laughed. His mind focused on a new image now—her in bed asleep.
“I’m coming for you,” he said.
This jolted her awake. She jumped up in bed and started to run to the doors to reinforce the deadbolts she had seen. As she moved, she realized that she was running in the wrong direction. Where she had seen herself in the dream wasn’t where she actually was. She remembered his joy at the thought of her trying to lock him out. Blurry with confusion and fear, she tried to steady herself.
“It was just a dream. It was just a dream.”
She was aware that before falling asleep she had cast a spell to see who wished to harm her.
There had to be something she misunderstood, missed. Dreams can be tricky. If a supernatural serial killer, or a killer of the mortal sort, ran rampant in the city it would have made the news. All that blood, she thought, feeling sick. In the frustrating nature of dreams, the details receded as she became more alert and calm. All she could be sure of was a serial killer, blood, her in a bed that was not her own and the ominous, “I’m coming for you.”
She let herself drift back into sleep, hoping for more details. Her workload for tomorrow after work was much heavier than she had thought.

Author Information

L. M. Halls has been a lifelong student of both the occult and literature. As a Wiccan priestess and spiritual counselor she works with individuals to develop the tools to build a strong sense of self, even when life has presented extraordinary challenges.
As an author she enjoys strong protagonists confronting the big life questions in landscapes that allow for some fun. By necessity her work addresses the darker side of the human soul but there is always enough beauty to balance what might otherwise seem a dire human condition.
Halls is committed to animals and the environment and when she and her partner are not playing with their three rescues, they are exploring the woods and tinkering in the apothecary.
